According to the European airport trade association, ACI Europe, passenger traffic saw an average growth of 5.1%.

Europe’s airports broke the 2 billion passengers mark in 2016. Meanwhile, Global passenger numbers, registered at 3.77 billion for 2016, have grown at a rapid rate since 2009. As Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE, states; “Much of this impressive performance is down to 3 interrelated factors: 1. Improving economic conditions driven by private consumption and falling unemployment, 2. Low oil prices and 3. Airline capacity expansion“.

The European countries with the largest passenger growth

  1.   Iceland – 40 per cent
  2.   Romania – 24 per cent
  3.   Ukraine – 23 per cent
  4.   Bulgaria – 22 per cent
  5.   Cyprus – 18 per cent
